This volume is bound in Dutch Gilt paper and gold tooled leather to the spine. Featuring four raised bands over hemp cords and laced-on boards, this is an example of masterful bookbinding.
Dutch Gilt refers to a type of high-quality, luxury decorative paper that was extremely popular in the 1700s. Key to its manufacture is using real metal leaf in place of inks.
The original production of Dutch Gilt ran from about 1600 to 1800. The papers on these bindings are the only modern variants available in the world, and are made by hand in Scotland using hand cut lino blocks meaning that the Dutch Gilt Properly Made Books in this sale are almost unfathomably rare.
