Turkey Mill, Kent, England TURKEY MILL was the original J Whatman paper mill and so perhaps the most important papermill in Western papermaking history. Amongst other feats, wove paper was invented here for Baskerville by Whatman. Whatman paper was made in two places under license - at Turkey Mill by the Hollingworths and at another place not too far away, Springfield Mill by Balston (a former partner of the Hollingworth brothers). The J Whatman Turkey Mill watermark was then sold to Balston's Springfield Mill in 1859s but production of fine quality paper continued at Turkey Mill including the introduction of one of the first papermaking machines. W.S. Hodgkinson & Co., Ltd. A few years ago we were fortunate enough to buy around 8000 sheets of handmade paper by WS Hodgkinson from the mill's in-house artist who bought them when the mill closed down in 1972. These papers were due to be sent for re-pulping and converted into South American currency before he stepped in and saved them at the very last moment (they were about to be loaded onto a train). He used them for his own work until he retired.
