Vellum Journal - Elephant

Regular price £0.00

One of a series of six simple hand-bound vellum books in a protective vellum envelope.

Each envelope is uniquely tooled with a single motif in genuine gold leaf which is repeated on the cover of the binding within.

This slimline postcard-sized book is filled with paper suitable for notes and drawing.

Made in tiny batches, every aspect of the book is created by hand, from the gold tooled vellum to the sewing of the pages to the creation of the gold tooled vellum envelope.

The binding itself is made in the simplest form, a single section of folded paper sewn through and spine. The book is a limp binding, giving it a greater flexibility than a hardback binding - the vellum in both the book and the envelope adds a glamourous sophistication that no other material can.

VELLUM

Like leather, vellum (aka parchment) is an animal skin product but it's processed differently to give a refined, smooth, papery finish. Prized for it's stength and beautiful translucency, vellum is a material like no other.

In ancient times, vellum was the predecessor to paper and was only used for precious things - illuminated religious texts, and maps. It wasn't used by "normal" people - it was the material of monarchs, bishops and society's hierarchy.

Today vellum is still an eye wateringly expensive material, and as such is rarely used for in bookbinding except for exhibition quality pieces or historical replicas which is why books like this are a rarity.
