Uprooted Prints
A COLLECTION OF HAND PRINTED DECORATIVE PATTERNED PAPERS
Launched Sunday, January 19th at: UK 8PM, LA 12PM, NY 3PM
Our first collection released during our temporary stay in Aberdeen (read why we're here on our VPCo Uprooted! page), these exquisitely made, hand printed decorative papers are primarily crafted for bookbinding and the general paper crafts.
However, just like all decorative paper, they can be used in various other ways including simply being framed, used as wallpaper (tiled sheet by sheet in the same way walls were papered back in the 18th century), for decoupage and collage, card making, as lampshade covering material and of course for box covering and lining etc.
ALPs (Antique Lining Papers) are a range of hand printed decorative papers devised as a cost effective solution for use in book related crafts.
These prints are copies of, or influenced by decorative papers from early European patterned papers which would have been printed from carved wood blocks and used much in the same way as ALPs are intended today, in bookbinding, crafts and general decor.
ALPs are printed from hand carved lino blocks - some from a single block, some from a combination of two. Above, you can see the lino block in an almost finished stage, with a print (Garden Vases) made using the completed plate.

THE PAPER
ALPs are printed over the top of antique, handmade, text-printed papers, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
This text-printed paper, called printers' waste, has been salvaged from broken or incomplete antique books which would otherwise be discarded.
Please note, using paper from broken books means that the text under the print differs from print to print, and so, whilst the print you receive will look exactly the same as the listings here, the text underneath will not be exactly the same.
Technically speaking, printers' waste is very good quality paper, all of it made by hand using linen rag fibres which means it's acid-free, and for bookbinders, being handmade, it has no grain direction.
IN USE - If gluing, we recommend using a paste adhesive, or a 50/50 blend of paste and PVA. The base paper can be quite lightweight so use your adhesive sparingly so as to reduce the chances of damaging the paper.
Printing over the top of text-printed paper continues an age old tradition where bookbinders would routinely use discarded paper, printed or otherwise, in the manufacture of books as it saved money, and back then, like today, bookbinders aren't paid very much!
