Letterpress printed in Stromness, Orkney.
A long time ago this printing press was delivered to Stromness, Orkney.
If you haven't seen one of these before it's called a Columbian "letterpress". It uses pressure or weight to transfer ink from wood or metal letters or a patterned plate onto paper resulting in printed matter - posters, papers, etc.
This beautiful machine was used for many years to produce our local newspaper as well as various public notices including the one below.
After many years use it eventually found it's way to our local printmaking group, Soulisquoy Printmakers, who are conveniently located just over the street from our place.
As some of you know, especially if you follow us onInstagram, we've been working on a series of letterpress printed decorative papers and here's our very first one which we made on the beautiful machine pictured above.
The design has been redrawn from a found endpaper in an antique book dating from early 1800s Europe.
