You can't find off-the-shelf books of this quality anywhere else in the world because no other bindery makes them. These books take months, not weeks or days to produce.
Properly Made Books are used by many artists and writers around the world and are held in collections all over the world including the Met Library's in New York City.
This Book -This blank book is totally handmade to the absolute highest standard and contains many pages of smooth cotton rag paper ideally suited for writing and drawing in pencil and inks and dry brush watercolour painting.
Structure - Properly Made Books are of a far superior quality and construction to anything available elsewhere.
The difference between our bindings and books made elsewhere is clear to see in the photos. However one of the most important differences and the thing that truly makes a Properly Made Book a special book can't be readily seen - it's the structure of the binding itself.
Due to the traditional, long way round techniques used to make these wonderful books, they open completely flat without any danger of breaking the spine; we call this "LayFlat".
Properly Made Books are a one-piece structure - the spine cannot and will not break. This is how the highest quality books have been made for hundreds of years.
Covers - Hand printed paper with gold tooled accents
Spine - Antique vellum spine.
Vellum or parchment is the material found in medieval illuminated manuscripts and in days gone by, legal documents which is where the material for this spine were taken from. This explains why on some of them writing can be seen.
Corners - Internal vellum tipped offering protection to the book when in a bag or pocket or being placed on a shelf. Just another nod to the attention to detail found in Properly Made Books.
Foredges - Natural deckled
Paper Inside - Text weight extra smooth cotton rag paper for writing and drawing in pencils and inks. This paper also performs well with dry brush watercolour.
