DUTCH GILT: Semi-Circle on Lemon Yellow
Dutch gilt or Brocade is a relief printmaking method (weight and pressure to transfer the medium from the print block to the paper) where golden metallic leaf is used rather than ink. Often the print is made over a colourful background to add more colour and enhance the gold.
This type of paper originated in Germany/Austria and was popular in 17 & 18th century Europe and often used as cover material for children's books and pamphlets.
The term "dutch" either refers to the country of origin or was a mispronounciation of Deautsche, no one really knows!
Printed from a single, repeat pattern, hand cut lino block.
Printed on handmade vintage paper with a coloured painted background.

Print Size: 490 x 340mm, 19 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches
PLEASE NOTE - The background colour of this paper is Lemon Yellow, not the green shown here. That's a result of a bamboozled camera and a technically deficient photographer!
