BINDING STYLE & BOOK STRUCTURE
A superior style of binding called Tight-back or Flexible Binding with laced on boards and raised bands.
This is the old, traditional style of bookbinding, rarely, if ever found in modern printed or blank books due to the time and skill level required.
We chose to use this style of binding as the result of experimentations when trying to recreate quickly bound record and law books made in London for the House of Lords, in the 17th,18th and 19th century.
Tight-back or Flexible binding allows the book to open completely flat without damaging the book; very important when drawing and writing.
The book-block (the inside papery part) is hand sewn in multiple sections and pasted directly to the leather spine.
The raised bands on the spine are made with hemp cords and are not merely decorative - they are structural; connecting the book-block to the front and back boards and the leather spine.
This type of structure makes the book incredibly strong and durable. Opening the book flat will, over time, cause the spine to crease but not break.
Tight Back or Flexible Bindings should not be mistaken for Case Bindings.
Case Binding is an inferior technique compared to Tight Back. It is used because it is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to produce a book.
With the exception of paperbacks or wire binding it is the most often used solution in mass produced or even studio produced bookbinding (printed or blank) where cost, time or skill is an issue.
Every handmade, expensive hard cover blank book for sale at your local stationer or exclusive department store is case bound.
You will NOT find a Tight Back Binding in your local stationery store.
The cover paper is a J&J Jeffery block printed and hand coloured printed paper
The spine is made from pigskin, reversed to show the suede side which has been blind tooled (embossed without gold leaf) along the long edges on the cover sides of the spine and on the spine itself.
