These two books were made circa 1917 as sample books to show the range of Whatman handmade papers.
Housed in two volumes; "Ledger & Writing Papers" and "Extra Weight Drawing & Other Papers"
Each book weights around 1.6kg (3.5lb) and measures 380 x 255 mm (15 x 10 1/4).
The Ledger book holds 115 samples, each identified by its name, weight and size.
The Extra Weight book holds 42 samples each identified by its name weight and size.
Whatman papers were used by artists, engineers, printmakers, writers, politicians and royalty. This is probably the only opportunity to own such a comprehensive resource for paper historians, paper conservators, libraries and museums.
The exterior of the books are commensurate with age. Every paper sample inside both books are immaculate. Many sheets contain watermarks dating from 1909 to 1917.
