Field Journal #2 Shells (with handmade 1950s vintage watercolour paper)
A PROPERLY MADE BOOK
You cannot find off-the-shelf books of this quality anywhere else in the world because no other bindery makes them. These books take months, not weeks or days to produce.
Made to the very highest standard using the finest quality materials, these lay-flat books contain 62 pages (124 sides) of wonderful vintage 1950s handmade paper by WS Hodgkinson of wookey Hole, Somerset, england
Entirely handmade in Scotland by J&J Jeffery, two of the most imortant (and increasingly collectable) craftspeople in world whose work is held all over the world including at the Met Library in New York City.
All of these books have hand-printed paper covers, tooled leather spines and internal vellum tipped corners (not visible on the exterior but visible on the interior) to help to protect the book in their day to day use.
LAYFLAT aka Tightback or Flexible Binding
Due to the traditional, long way round techniques used to make these wonderful books, they open completely flat without any danger of breaking the spine. Most books are case bindings where the book block is glued to the front and rear cover. Ours are a one-piece structure.
Pattern dyed, gold tooled to the top and tail and blind tooling (no gold) along the long sides front and rear of the leather spine.
COVERS - Hand Printed
Hand printed using a combination of hand cut lino blocks, stencils, hand made ink and vintage base papers these cover papers are based on or inspired by historical decorative papers found in books from the 17th century onwards,
Due to the combination of papers and leather, every single book we produce is unique.
CORNERS - Vellum Tipped
A further example of the craftsmanship and attention to detail these books have been made with, these all feature vellum tipped corners.
