We've decided to convert part of our collection of very rare and valuable old papers into a small series of handmade books as our way to celebrate our passion for vintage paper.
We call these Double Elephant Books because each book is made with a vintage/antique sheet of handmade paper made to the traditional size called Double Elephant.
Before the days of A & B standard sizes all papers sizes were given names such as foolscap, post, imperial and double elephant. There are many other size names which you can read more about here.
THE PAPER INSIDE THIS BOOK
Unbleached Arnold was handmade in Kent until the 1950s when the mill closed down. As the name suggests the paper was made with unbleached linen rag and from the little we have seen it was spectacular quality.
Original Paper Size: 98 x 67 cm, 40 x 26 inches, Double Elephant
Weight: 300gsm, 148lb (approx)
PROPERLY MADE BOOKS
Made entirely by hand to the very highest standard using the finest quality materials,
You can't find off-the-shelf books of this quality anywhere else in the world because no other bindery makes them. These books can take months, not weeks or days to produce.
Entirely handmade in Scotland by J&J Jeffery, two of the most important (and increasingly collectable) craftspeople in world whose work is held all over the world including at the Met Library in New York City.
LAYFLAT aka Tightback or Flexible Binding
Due to the traditional, long way round techniques used to make these wonderful books, they open completely flat without any danger of breaking the spine. Most books are case bindings where the book block is glued to the front and rear cover. Ours are a one-piece structure.
