These papers have been removed from a ledger which was originally bound by a stationer, Henry Froome of Bishopsgate, London who was in business circa 1774 to 1783, which accurately dates the paper.

Being ledger paper, each sheet has rule marks printed on, sewing holes in the centre and some pages are numbered (hand written in the script of the day.

USES

This was made for written ledger work which means that it was heavily sized to take inks. Paper like this was also widely used in the day for watercolour and printing.

HISTORY

The Taylors were an 18th century papermaking family based in and around around Kent, England.

Clement Taylor died in 1776 having worked Poll Mill, just upriver from Turkey Mill and Basted Mill where he apprenticed his sons John, James, George and Clement (jr).

After his death his sons took over the mills which included Basted, Poll, Upper Tolvil and Old Mill in Hollingbourne which was rented to him by Whatman.

The Paper - Taylor

These papers watermarked as 'C Taylor' were made by Clement (sr) prior to 1776 at Poll Mill, Kent, England.

The GR watermark refers to King George III, George Rex (1738 - 1820). It was a watermark found in papers produced in this era to show that they were of a high enough quality for printing and publishing work.

The exact date of manufacture is unknown but we estimate it to have been produced in the 1770s making it over 250 years old.

Full Sheet Size: 19 x 14½ inches, 483 x 370 mm

If you choose to use this paper and you don't want to include the rule marks, two peices measuring 5½ x 13 inches can be harvested from each sheet and these will contain no rule marks or writing.

Condition: Surface condition is generally extremely clean. As the sheets have been removed from a ledger, every page has ruling on which can be seen in the photos and some of the sheets have handwritten, 18th century page numbering on them which I feel only adds to the character.

Weight: Medium text-weight, approximately 125 gsm

Surface: Laid (the laid lines are 1 inch apart)
