Stromness Album

STROMNESS & NEIGHBOURHOOD - A Photographic View Album

These books are newly reprinted from the very first photographic book of Stromness and environs, published in 1897.

A couple of years ago we were allowed to rummage through a long closed stationers shop in Stomness where we were fortunate enough to find a treasure trove of historical Orkney photographs and this book.

Externally, it was in a pretty bad state but inside it was pretty perfect, displaying various photographs of our home town, Stromness, as well as other places of interest including Kirkwall cathedral and the Standing Stones of Steness.

Originally the book was printed in collotype, an early gelatine based method of printing in monotone widely used between 1870 and 1920.

Today, we have faithfully reproduced the images using state of the art digital processes printed here in Orkney on good quality paper stock.

Each book contains 16 photos - by today's standards not much, but back then, given the cost of producing such publications, it would have been quite a luxurious product!

We are binding 200 copies of this book in our Stromness workshop. Each one will be unique, some in full leather with gold tooling, others with hand printed paper covers, leather or vellum spines and corners.

Each book will be individually numbered and supplied with a hand printed cotton bag.
