Hand Printed Paper

Print Guide

FANCY PRINTS are made with multiple, time-consuming, often complex colourisation processes.

ANTIQUE LINING PAPERS (ALPS) employ fewer complex printing processes compared to Fancy Prints making them quicker and less expensive to produce, hence the difference in price.

ALPS and Fancy Prints are hand printed by J&J Jeffery from their hand carved lino plates. The patterns for both types are taken from or inspired by period patterns found in endpapers or covers of books from antiquarian bindings.

KATAGAMI are antique Japanese paper stencils from the 1800s which were used to apply patterns onto kimono and scarf material using indigo and other natural dyes.

VPCo owns a huge collection of Katagami stencils which we use to create letterpress printing plates to make new prints of traditional Japanese designs and patterns.

VPCo PRESS PRINTS are relief/letterpress printed patterned paper whose designs are inspired by or copied from historical sources.

We often use two and three step processes to complete a print including painting the surface of the papers with inks and natural dyes multiple times until the desired depth of colour is acheived.
