Simplicity combined with luxury - rag paper and leather

These flexible pads have been crafted entirely by hand in our workshop - the machinery for shaping the covers and paper are hand powered, the holes are drilled by hand. 

These simple yet gorgeous pads are filled with 48 sides of beautiful white, cotton rag paper, sandwiched between hand embossed leather.

We wanted to make something practical and simple using the best materials available so that you can experience the joy of using some wonderful paper, whilst protecting your work with a traditional, hard wearing, leather cover.

THE PAPER INSIDE

A wonderfully textured, tactile, white cotton rag paper of unknown origin.

I found a pile of this paper laying in a storage drawer, long forgotten. It is not watermarked nor was there any identifying information to remind where this came from and so finding it was like finding a little bit of treasure!

The colour is a natural white with a textured surface texture and the weight is about 130gsm - a decent text weight, making it ideal for inks, pencils, light watercolour washes and other media.

We rounded the corners because it's a great way to protect the paper when in transit - squared corners can catch and deform in a pocket or a bag, rounded corners less so. 

THE BINDING

We've made this series of books as simply as we possibly could and so we gathered the paper, drilled holes and sandwiched it between two pieces of leather and joined it up with a pair of screwposts.

The beautiful leather came from Pittards and before that, a cow.

Pittards were a well known glove maker to the Royal family who sadly closed last year (Pittards, not the Royal Family) leaving behind some unhappy employees, disappointed glove enthusiasts and a pile of top notch leather. 

Holding the pad together are a pair of screw posts which are removable. To take out a drawing to give away, sell or frame, all you have to do is unscrew the posts, take out the paper and reassemble the binding. It takes about 30 seconds max.

The Travel Sketcher is bag friendly in both size and structure.
