One of a series of heavily gold tooled pocket bindings.

DESCRIPTION

Imagine an antique book crafted in the 17th and 18th centuries. This is the inspiration for this series of Monumenta bindings.

This small, tall book contains 68 pages of vintage fly-weight paper made by Turkey Mill in the 60's on Englands first papermaking machine installed in the mid 1800s. This is a wonderful paper for inks.

The book is an unusual format, tall and skinny, and lavishly tooled in 23½ carat gold leaf over our walnut dyed, rich brown, vegetable tanned goatskin leather.

In the hand it feels reassuringly well made, the impressions of each patterned brass tool obvious. The pattern is newly flowering plants signalling the end of winter.

The pages have been sewn on thick hemp cord to create 3 raised bands on the spine. Over time, opening and closing this book will give the spine a beautifully well-worn look.

The techniques used in the construction of the book is such that it can be fully opened without fear of causing any structural damage - we call this LayFlat.
