Dutch Gilt: Bewick's Animals
A menagerie of 18th century animals
Suitable for bookbinding, box making, picture framing, furniture decoration and the general paper crafts.
About: This print is heavily influenced by Thomas Bewick's illustrated animals.
Thomas Bewick (c. 11 August 1753 – 8 November 1828) was an English wood-engraver, natural history author and natural history illustrator. Early in his career he took on all kinds of work such as engraving cutlery, making the wood blocks for advertisements, and illustrating children's books. He gradually turned to illustrating, writing and publishing his own books, gaining an adult audience for the fine illustrations in A History of Quadrupeds.
Print: Dutch Gilt + Blob Stencil
Dutch Gilt Relief printing is where a lino plate has metal leaf applied to its surface which is brought into contact with treated, sized paper. When pressure is applied, the non-recessed surface will leave leaf on the paper, whereas the recessed areas will not. When perfectly dry, the excess leaf is carefully removed revealing the pattern.
Stencilling - A stencil is made by cutting out the required shapes in a heavy oiled cardstock to match the area where added colour is desired. An translucent ink is dabbed over the hole in the stencil leaving the colour making a multiple coloured, highly decorative print.
In this instance, four colours have been applied in a seemingly random pattern best described as blobs!
