A binding in marbled paper and gold tooled vellum, filled with paper for drawing & writing

THIS BOOK:

This attractive volume is bound in a hand marbled paper and gold tooled antique vellum.

Marbled paper has commonly beeen used to cover books for hundreds of years.

In brief, the process of making marbled papers are as follows - colours are floated on the surface of specially treated water and manipulated using tools until the desired pattern is made. A sheet of paper is laid onto the surface of the water and the pattern is transferred from the water's surface onto the paper. Normally the patterns resemble veins and patterns found in marbled stone, hence the name.

This book features a vellum spine and vellum tipped corners which serve as both decorative and practical additions and very rarely seen on any off-the-shelf binding.

Vellum (aka parchment) is an animal product, similar to leather but processed differently to give a strong, papery finish. Vellum is and always has been a very expensive material.

Thanks to its strength and especially its longevity, vellum was used to record legal matters - laws, wills, mortgages, loans and indentures etc. The vellum on the spine and corners on this binding come from such a document, an indenture, which is why writing and the other marks can be seen.
