Hatakami Cutch is a speciality handmade paper made by the same family in the same way for generations and is used for printmaking, calligraphy and fine art.

This paper is made using traditional methods which have hardly changed for thousands of years using a local fibre called Argeli (better known as mitsumata) which grows in and is harvested in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Once the sheet has been formed and dried it is then dyed using a natural colourant called Cutch.

Cutch is a brown dye from the heartwood of the Acacia tree.  The trees are harvested, the bark removed and the heartwood made into wood chips.

The wood chips are boiled in water until the liquid becomes very thick. It is then poured onto mats where the extract hardens into a hard resin as it cools down.

When ready the dye is painted onto the handmade paper and while still wet transferred to a board and allowed to slowly dry in the sun.

Because of the various processes involved this paper can only be made during a small window of time meaning that production and availability is very limited.

The tan brown smooth surface is perfect for printmaking and drawing.

Usage - printmaking, drawing, bookbinding, box covering, decoupage, collage, lamp shades.

Large - 780 x 510 mm, 30 3/4 x 20 inches (approximately)
