Hatakami Walnut is a speciality handmade paper which has been made by the same family in the same way for generations and is used for printmaking, calligraphy and fine art.
This paper is made using traditional methods which have hardly changed for thousands of years using a local fibre called Argeli which is grown and harvested in the foothills of the Himalayas.
Once the sheet has been formed and dried it is then dyed using a natural colourant made from walnut husks. They are boiled in water for hours over a wood fire releasing the natural dye - a beautiful deep, rich, dark brown colour. This liquor is then boiled until it becomes a thick concentrate.
When ready the dye is painted onto the handmade paper and while still wet transferred to a board and allowed to slowly dry in the sun.
Because of the various processes involved this paper can only be made during a small window of time meaning that production and availability is very limited.
The deep brown smooth surface is perfect for printmaking and drawing.
